Firstly, the token approach is looking super promising and I’m working on building a prototype with this approach. Once I reach that point I’ll write a follow up post.
Secondly, a Figma person reached out to tell me that W3C Design Token exports in Figma are coming this month! Figma is adding support to export variables as tokens using the W3C spec that’s being proposed. I’m quite excited about this as it means it should be easier to work with tokens from Figma in other scenarios - e.g. converting tokens to CSS custom properties.
